Maximising Savings on Groceries and Mobile Phone Bills with Woolworths Mobile
In an effort to keep on top of outrageous inflation, one practical strategy involves leveraging Woolworths Mobile, which offers a great benefit that reduces both grocery and mobile phone expenses. By subscribing to Woolworths Mobile and taking advantage of its Woolworths discount program, when paired with a Woolworths Everyday Rewards Card, you can enjoy substantial savings. Here’s how we do it:
10% Savings on one shop per month… per adult…
By linking my Woolworths Mobile to my Woolworths Everyday Rewards Card I’ve unlocked a 10% discount on one grocery shop per month. For our family, this means considerable savings, especially when we plan our larger shops strategically.
Mrs Forget the Grind has subscribed to the Woolworths Everyday Extra rewards subscription, which also grants a 10% discount on one shop per month in addition to providing a higher points return per dollar spent. By coordinating our shopping trips, we manage to save up to $100 per month. Here’s how it works:
We plan two Large Shops per Month: Each discount is capped at $500 per shop so by conducting two large shops each month, we can maximise our savings. The 10% discount effectively saves us $50 on each shop up to $500, totalling up to $100 savings per month.
Additional Savings with Discount Gift Cards
In addition to the monthly discounts, Woolworths Mobile offers access to discounted gift cards. As of June 2024, we can purchase Woolworths gift cards at a 4% discount and Dan Murphy’s gift cards at a 5% discount. For example:
Woolworths Gift Cards: Buy gift cards with a tenure of $500 for $480. This 4% discount might seem small, but it adds up over time. Combine this with shopping for specials and marked down items and you can save a packet on each shop.
Using these gift cards for our grocery and alcohol purchases allows us to stretch our budget further. For example, if we buy $500 worth of groceries with discounted gift cards, we effectively save an additional $20 each time. This combined with the 10% discount equates to a further $50 saving, and shopping the markdowns can easily add a further $50 or an additional $120 value on $500 shopping trip. I think I got that calculation right???
An additional bonus is you earn $10 off a Woolworths shop with every 2000 Woolworths Points earnt. While I don’t really calculate when we will get this bonus, it is a nice surprise when it pops up every couple of months at the register.
Further:
Dan Murphy’s Gift Cards: Buy a $100 gift card for $95. This 5% discount is perfect for purchasing alcohol at a reduced price. I combine this with walking the aisle looking for discount cabernet sauvignon and craft beer!
Supplementing with Aldi
To further enhance our savings, we shop at Aldi for specific items that offer great value. Aldi is known for its competitive prices on a variety of products, and we have found particular savings on:
- Salmon Portions: High-quality and affordable.
- Eggs and Meat: Excellent prices compared to other retailers.
- Packaged Salad: Fresh and reasonably priced.
- Quality Coffee: Budget-friendly without compromising on taste.
- Aisle of Shame: I also wander the “aisle of shame” looking for great bargains. I particularly like the Ouma Rusks when they’re in stock for $5.99 for 500g. A 1kg box costs over $15 on Amazon so I stock up when they’re available in Aldi!
By combining the Woolworths discount hacks, shopping sales and mark downs and the consistent savings from Aldi, we keep our grocery budget between $600 and $700 a fortnight for our family of four.
Affordable Mobile Plans with Woolworths Mobile
Our transition to Woolworths Mobile from Telstra, was primarily driven by the low annual recharge cost and the additional grocery discounts. Woolworths Mobile plans are incredibly economical, and we’ve found them to offer excellent value. Here are some key benefits:
- Low Annual Recharge Cost: Significant savings compared to other providers.
- Grocery Discounts: The 10% monthly discount on one grocery shop per month is a great perk, particularly when paired with discount gift cards.
- Data Transfer Between Plans: This flexibility ensures that we never run out of data by sharing data between family members when required.
One potential downside is that on the yearly recharge plans, you can only access 4G rather than 5G. However, we haven’t noticed any significant difference in performance since making the switch.
Conclusion
By strategically using Woolworths Mobile, linking to our Woolworths Everyday Rewards Cards, utilising discounted gift cards and cashing in Woolworths Points, we’ve managed to achieve significant savings on both groceries and mobile phone bills. Supplementing our Woolworths grocery shopping with trips to Aldi, further enhances our savings, allowing us to maintain a budget of $600 to $700 a fortnight for our family of four. This approach not only helps us stay within our budget, but also ensures that we get the best value for our money without compromising on quality. If you’re looking to make the most of your grocery and mobile phone budget, consider switching to Woolworths Mobile and following a similar strategy.
